American Public Media strongly supports the friend-of-the-court brief signed by our colleagues at Minnesota Public Radio and LAist in support of a legal challenge brought by CNN, MS NOW and Politico after their journalists were denied access to the White House. The brief argues that press access should not be restricted based on a news organization’s editorial viewpoint.

Journalists have a responsibility to ask questions, verify information and report what they learn, including when that reporting is uncomfortable for people in positions of power.

Access isn't a special privilege journalists seek for themselves. Reporters attend briefings, travel with public officials and ask questions so that people who cannot be in those rooms can understand what their government is doing.

At APM, we strongly support the principle at the heart of this brief: decisions about press access should not be based on whether government officials approve of a news organization's reporting. Independent journalism requires the freedom to report without fear that critical coverage will cost journalists their ability to do their jobs.

As American Public Media listeners and supporters, we co-sign this statement in support of a free press.
